dans versus à versus en

à = at, to

en = in

dans = inside, into

Dans la classe, il ne faut pas fumer.  In the classroom, one musn’t smoke.

Nous sommes en classe, nous allons en ville.  We’re in class, we’re going to town.

*the difference between

en ville (to town, in town)

and

dans la ville (into the town, in the town)

en classe (in class)

and

dans la classe (in the class, in the classroom)

*other prepositions

devant – in front of / derrière – behind

avant – before / après – after
