Le Participe Présent – The Present Participle

1.  Used to say “in, by, while, upon verbING”

2.  One can use le participe présent to indicate that 2 actions happen at the same time, done by the same person.

*  Il pleure en parlant (il pleure et il parle en même temps)

*  Il parle en mangeant (il parle et il mange en même temps)

a.  The two actions can be the opposite of each other:

* Tout en pleurant, elle riait. (elle riait et pleurait)

b. The participe présent can also indicate how an action has happened or been achieved.

*En vendant les maisons, il est devenu riche.

c.  The participe présent can describe the manner or way to do a thing.

*Il a ouvert la porte en donnant des coups de pied.

d.  The participe présent can imply a necessary condition to happen to make the main verb happen.

*En travaillant mieux, tu pourrais avoir de bonnes notes.

To Form participe présent

1.  Take the nous form of a verb.

2. Drop the ‘ons’

3.  add ‘ant’

Nous parlons > parl > parlant  (talking)

Nous pouvons > pouv > pouvant  (being able to)

4.  The participe présent is used with the preposition ‘en’, which roughly translates to ‘in, by, while, upon’
