Qu’est-ce que means ‘what’ as the direct object of a question.
Qu’est-ce que tu écoutes? – What are you listening to?
Qu’est-ce qu’ils font? – What are they doing?
Qu’est-ce que tu veux faire? – What do you want to do?
Qu’est-ce que tu brûles au four? – What are you burning in the oven?
Qu’est-ce qui means ‘what’ as the subject of the question.
Qu’est-ce qui est arrivé? – What happened?
Qu’est-ce qui s’est passé? – What happened?
Qu’est-ce qui fait ce bruit? – What’s making that noise?
Qu’est-ce qui brûle au four? – What’s burning in the oven?
Qui on its own at the beginning of a question means who.
Qui veut commencer? – Who wants to start?
Qui vous a dit ça? – Who told you that?
Qui est venu nous voir? – Who came to see us?
Qui est-ce qui is a more emphatic form of who.
Qui est-ce qui a jeté cette boule de neige? – Who threw that snowball?
Qui est-ce qui a cassé la fenêtre? – Who broke the window?
Quoi means “what” when following a preposition.
Avec quoi est-ce qu’il va réparer la voiture?
À quoi pensez-vous? À mes vacances.
De quoi avez-vous besoin?
Dans quoi est-ce que tu veux que je mette ces fleurs?
De quoi est-ce qu’on a besoin pour préparer une sauce vinaigrette?
Avec quoi est-ce qu’on fait un gâteau au chocolat?
*rule of thumb –
a. Qui is followed by a verb or verb phrase
b. Que is followed by a noun
c. Quoi always follows a preposition.
